We spent Thursday night in Valence, and then on Friday morning we packed our bags and hit the road for Sabine’s parent’s country house in Ruoms, deep in the Ardèche. The Ardèche is a department of France west of the Rhone and northwest of Provence. It was described to me as being sauvage (very wild) and profound “really deep and isolated”. Along the way we had a nice picnic lunch in Vogüé, did a quick driveby of Balazuc, one of the “ Plus Beaux Villages de France ” (most beautiful villag

Le Nu Provencal, 1949, by Willy Ronis, who died today at age 99. French photographer Willy Ronis died today in Paris, apparently lively and active until the end. His work captured the romance of French culture of the mid-20th century with classic, poetic beauty. Ronis learned photography with his father in the family

I’m in love with another man. Let me call him Daniel. We met last summer in the South of France, in Provence to be precise, exactitude being something he approves of. I would like to say we bonded in an outdoor cafe over buttery croissant and café crème, or at a chic bistro seated in bentwood chairs with steaming mussels and chilled rosé before us. No, Daniel and I met through my husband Ron. He introduced us at Marseille airport and then offered him a ride to the village where we were

As promised, here is what I plan to do before I die. This list is now a permanent addition to Raptitude.com, and the most up-to-date version can be found by clicking “The List” tab on the top of any page. If you want to make your own list, here is the comprehensive guide to making one that you will honor. A few notes: You’ll notice my list is very travel-heavy. One of my major goals in life is to achieve a location-independent income, which will allow me to move around the globe without

Just realised that the Yardbirds are going to be playing at the Festival de Blues in Salaise sur Sanne a week before we are next going to Roussillon. A real pity as it is only about one and a half hours north. Oh well, I suppose we have seen them once or twice already… details athttp://www.jimmccarty.co.uk/Yardbirds-Tour-Dates.asp

Cardon before cooking SYNOPSIS: Organic agriculture and biodiversity have in recent years brought about a rediscovery of many “forgotten” vegetables that people especially in Europe and France conscientiously tried to forget as they reminded them of the privations suffered during WWII. The same people had then to make do with untraditional vegetables because potatoes, carrots and so on were confiscated by occupying forces or their own armies. With sustainibility and bioagriculture made mor
