Slap on the wrist for Sarkozy
rivieratimes.com says: As had been widely expected, the first round of France’s regional elections held yesterday delivered a resounding slap on the wrist to French President Nicholas Sarkozy. However, in the PACA (Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur) Region a centre-right coalition is neck and neck with the socialists, closely followed by National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen who lived up to his promise to deliver a “big surprise”.

Strong hints of blue on the Côte d’Azur
rivieratimes.com says: The map of France may be swathed in pink after the presidential UMP’s drubbing in the second round of the French regional elections at the weekend, but that is not the whole story. Like all but one (Alsace) of the 22 regions, PACA (Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur) voted in a socialist president but in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments the centre right UMP did better than in 2004.

Skiing on Mont Ventoux

February 2010 and after 5 years we finally made it onto the slopes of Mont Ventoux.DSCN0311Mind you, there hasn't been much snow the last few years. For somewhere an hour and a quarter from Roussillon you could do a lot worse. At Chalet Reynard, a mountain restaurant, we were able to hire boots and skis and get a lift pass. The skiing is limited with a couple of drag lifts and about 6 runs – a mixture of blues and reds – however the snow was fantastic, the views are great and we had a jolly good lunch after a couple of  hours on the slopes. We'll definitely go again.

Saint-Tropez snaps up award
rivieratimes.com says: Many a good photograph is down to being in the right place at the right time and being quick off the mark to capture the moment: or at least to give that impression. But for the young photographer Petr Krejci, winner of the “Most Original Photo Award” at the “France by the Sea” exhibition in London, there was a little more to it.

Provence receives Anthony Bourdain

says:

The famous NY chef Anthony Bourdain hires a villa with a big kitchen and bones up on Provencal food. Sadly, I am in the UK, so this show doesnt make it to the UK.

I think Bourdain gets life in Provence – mind you, who doesn’t? “It’s the place that dreams and magazine spreads are made of. Where everything is beautiful, and soft, and smells good. Like a movie, only better”, says Tony. This episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations made me long for a life of simplicity, good food, and great wine.

Walkabout in Nice

Earth and sky

Today the Fnac, which is a French chain of stores that sell multimedia, books and music, held a “photo marathon” in Nice. I signed up a few weeks ago, thinking it would be nice to get some challenging ideas, plus registration was free. The day started at 9am, and we were given three themes on which to shoot photos, one every two hours. There were three hundred of us in all, and we had to turn in two photos per team (I was a one-person team, most were two-person) after the two hours. The prizes were some Canon cameras; I forget which since I didn’t participate with winning in mind (plus I’ve always preferred Nikon). All participants got a free cinema ticket, which is nice with movies so expensive to see nowadays. The themes were “le reflet dans tous ses états” (“reflection every which way”), “de haut en bas, de bas en haut” (“from top to bottom, from bottom to top,” which I translated to keep puns on “h
