Tough austerity measures to target the rich and consumers
France’s wealthy citizens are to bare the brunt of new austerity measures announced by the government. Consumers will not escape unscathed however, with added tax on tobacco and alcohol also planned, all in a bid to cut 12 billion from the country’s deficit by the end of 2012. Prime Minister Francois Fillon made the highly anticipated announcement yesterday, saying “Our country cannot live beyond its means forever.”
Polo team parade through Saint Tropez
A polo team and brass band parade will launch the 2011 Open du Soleil tournament this evening in Saint Tropez.
Escaped prisoner remains on the run.
An escaped prisoner, who made a daring getaway from Nice’s psychiatric hospital on Monday, remains on the run. The incident has re-ignited concern over major security flaws at the institution, which has seen at least 12 known escapes in just 10 years.

Argentinian police arrest six in connection with students’ murder
Six people were arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of two French students last month in Argentina.
